Euro NCAP Issues Urgent Recall For MG3 Seat Defect

Euro NCAP Issues Urgent Recall For MG3 Seat Defect

clock5/18/2026

In a highly unusual and pressing move, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has issued a direct public appeal to owners of the MG3. The safety watchdog is urging drivers to immediately visit their local dealerships to address a critical factory defect involving the vehicle's seating mechanism. This urgent warning comes eight months after the initial discovery of the rare engineering flaw.

What Happened During the Crash Tests?

The safety concerns originated in September 2025 during routine, yet rigorous, frontal impact testing. Evaluators witnessed an unprecedented failure—one not seen since the testing program's inception in 1997. Due to a structural weakness in the seat track latch, the driver's seat forcefully slid forward by approximately 112 mm (roughly 4.4 inches) upon impact. This unwanted momentum dramatically increases the risk of severe physical trauma to the occupant by pushing them dangerously close to the deploying airbag and steering column.

MG's Response and the Free Repair Solution

To its credit, MG responded swiftly to the findings. The manufacturer developed an immediate technical remedy that involves structurally reinforcing the latch components within the seat rail. This specialized repair is currently being offered entirely free of charge at all authorized service centers. However, despite the availability of the fix, thousands of individuals driving MG3 models manufactured prior to August 2025 continue to ignore the official recall notices.

Why Is Euro NCAP Speaking Out Directly?

It is standard protocol for manufacturers to handle recalls, making Euro NCAP's direct public intervention a testament to the flaw's severity. Dr. Aled Williams, the Program Director at Euro NCAP, emphasized that this defect represents a massive safety vulnerability. Although no real-world injuries have been officially attributed to this specific defect yet, the organization stresses that vehicle safety allows no room for complacency. All affected owners across Europe, the UK, Australia, and South Africa have been notified. If you own a pre-August 2025 MG3, a brief visit to your dealer could be the crucial difference between a safe journey and an unpredictable hazard.
